About the Institute

The Pioneer of Legal Nurse Consulting Since 1982

LegalNurse.com is the nation’s oldest and largest legal nurse consulting training institute, helping registered nurses use their healthcare expertise in a new and rewarding way.

Founded in 1982, LegalNurse.com pioneered the field of legal nurse consulting and has spent more than four decades advancing the profession through comprehensive education, certification, mentoring, and professional resources designed specifically for registered nurses.

Today, LegalNurse.com continues that mission by preparing RNs to become Certified Legal Nurse Consultants (CLNC® consultants) and giving them the knowledge, skills, and ongoing support to confidently consult with attorneys on medical-related cases.

In my first year as a part-time CLNC consultant, I did about 50 cases at an average of nearly $3,000 per case.

LegalNurse.com began in 1982 when Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD recognized that nurses possessed something attorneys needed: the ability to understand complex medical records, standards of care and healthcare issues, and explain them in a way that could strengthen medical-related cases.

Vickie pioneered legal nurse consulting as a professional opportunity for registered nurses and went on to develop the first national legal nurse consulting certification program in 1994.

The CLNC® Certification Program established a comprehensive educational path for RNs entering the field, one that combines legal nurse consulting skills with the practical knowledge needed to work successfully with attorneys.

In 2020, entrepreneur Tate Garrett acquired the company from Vickie and became the company’s owner and President. Under Tate’s leadership, LegalNurse.com continues to evolve the CLNC Certification Program and its resources to meet the changing needs of nurses, attorneys and the healthcare and legal industries.

Vickie continues to contribute to the CLNC Certification Program as an independent education consultant.

The CLNC® Difference

Becoming a CLNC consultant involves more than passing an exam. CLNC Certification is designed to prepare registered nurses to apply their existing healthcare knowledge to the legal arena and understand how to turn that expertise into a professional consulting service.

The CLNC Certification Program combines comprehensive legal nurse consulting education with practical business training. Registered nurses learn how to analyze medical-related cases, identify relevant standards of care, organize and summarize medical records, conduct medical literature research, assist with discovery, locate expert witnesses, and provide many other services attorneys need.

Just as important, CLNC students learn how to communicate their value to attorneys, develop attorney-client relationships, and build a legal nurse consulting business.

The result is an educational program designed not simply to certify nurses, but to prepare them to work as legal nurse consultants.

The Meaning Behind Our Mark

The LegalNurse.com mark brings together two elements at the heart of legal nurse consulting: nursing and the law.

Support That Continues After Certification

Our relationship with nurses doesn’t end when they earn their CLNC® Certification.

LegalNurse.com developed the CLNC Mentoring Program to give students and CLNC consultants access to experienced, practicing CLNC Mentors who understand the questions and challenges that arise when starting and growing a legal nurse consulting business.

From analyzing cases and preparing work product to communicating with attorneys and developing a business, CLNC Mentors provide practical guidance based on their own experience in the field.

CLNC consultants have access to mentoring for as long as they remain certified because we believe ongoing support is an essential part of long-term professional development.
