What Does It Take to Be a Competent Legal Nurse Consultant?
The following statements identify the essential competencies a Certified Legal Nurse
ConsultantCM (CLNC®) should possess. The CLNC® should be able to:
- Demonstrate the knowledge inherent in the role of the Certified Legal Nurse ConsultantCM.
- Apply knowledge of basic sciences to the provision of legal nurse consulting services.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the litigation process.
- Apply knowledge of theories of liability used in medical-related cases.
- Demonstrate knowledge of personal injury, products liability, environmental and workers'
compensation cases.
- Apply screening principles to medical-related cases.
- Demonstrate case evaluation strategies and apply principles to report writing.
- Detect tampering in the medical record.
- Conduct medical library and Internet research to support interpretation of the medical
record.
- Obtain and interpret medical records for adherence to and deviations from standards of
care.
- Demonstrate knowledge of managed care litigation.
- Demonstrate ability to assist attorneys in developing discovery, such as interrogatories
and requests for production.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the role of the testifying expert and ability to interface
with experts.
- Demonstrate knowledge of contract formulation.
- Integrate legal and ethical principles into legal nurse consulting.
- Demonstrate knowledge of marketing strategies and apply interviewing techniques.
